Plate recognition in a car park: vehicle entry with the phone camera

In a car park, plate recognition is less a piece of technology than a doorway: the first step that opens the vehicle's record. Once that record opens correctly, the duration, the fee, the subscriber check, the till and the reports all follow from it. This page explains how reading a plate with the phone camera works on site, where it struggles, and what the honest answer to the hardware question is.

Why the plate, and why at the moment of entry?

The key to a parking record is the plate. Not the customer's name, not a phone number, not a ticket number — the plate is the only field shared by finding the car at exit, knowing how many vehicles are inside, and answering "has this car been here before?".

That is why the plate matters at entry and in one consistent form. If the same car is recorded once as "34ABC123" and once as "34 ABC 123", the system holds two vehicles: the history splits, the subscriber match fails, and the search at exit comes up empty. Reading with the camera is the easiest way to keep that consistency; speed is the second benefit, not the first.

How reading with a phone camera works

The flow is three steps: open the camera, frame the plate, confirm the right candidate. Technically:

Plate reading does not work in every condition: a muddy plate, a bent frame, glare in the rain, a steep angle, headlights at night. Typing must therefore always stay available — and, more importantly, whoever is typing should not have to wait for a camera.

Practical tip: if readings are poor, change the distance first. Get close enough to fill the frame with the plate and stand as parallel to it as you can; keep the light on the plate rather than behind you.

The honest answer about hardware

Plate recognition in parking usually brings to mind a fixed ANPR camera on a pole, a barrier and a cabin computer. Those have their place: in high-traffic, unattended or turnstile-controlled sites the camera does the work.

In most small and mid-sized car parks, though, the day runs with one person in a booth. There, the one concrete meaning of reading plates with a phone is this: you can start without dedicated plate-recognition hardware. The phone or tablet you already have becomes the operating terminal; no installation crew, cabling or pole is involved.

The limit deserves to be equally clear: reading with a phone is not a system that lifts a barrier or drives a turnstile. OtoparkPro does not control barriers, turnstiles or fixed ANPR cameras. Plate recognition is the doorway, not the product

An app that reads plates quickly but carries nothing afterwards solves only the first three seconds of the job. Once the record opens, this is what follows:

  1. Duration.Arrival is time-stamped, the car joins the "inside" list, the clock runs by itself.
  2. Tariff and fee.At exit the fee comes from the active tariff: free minutes, tiers, daily cap.
  3. Subscriber check.If the plate belongs to a subscriber, no fee is asked at exit; if the period has ended, it moves to the collection list.
  4. Collection and till.Cash, card or online payment lands in the till, and the evening collapses into one figure.
  5. History.Earlier visits of the same plate stay with the record, so "has this car been here before?" has an answer.

What happens after the plate is read
